Richard Claxton Gregory is an American comedian, civil rights activist and vegetarian. His works were bestsellers. Gregory rose to fame in the African American community in South America for his "touchless" outfits, teasing the hardships and racism in America. In 1961 he became a mainstay of comedy clubs, appeared on television, and released comedy record albums. Gregory was at the forefront of political action in the 1960s, when he opposed the Vietnam War and racial injustice. He was arrested several times and went on a hunger strike. Later, he became a speaker and an author, mainly motivating spirituality. Gregory died of heart failure at a hospital in Washington, D.C., aged 84 in August 2017
