Denis Joseph "D. J." Carey is a retired Irish hurdler who played as a leftist forward for senior team Kilkenny. Carey began her club-level obstacle course with Young Irelands. He joined the club's best adult captain at the age of 17 in 1988 and had his first success in 1992 when the club won the Kilkenny Intermediate Championship title and promoted to the Kilkenny Hurdles Premier Division. Carey went on to win the Kilkenny Senior Championship medal as captain in 1996 and 2002. He had won several times in three different crosses for the club before retiring. After 25 years of club career in 2013. Interdistrict level, Carey was part of a small team that Kilkenny managed to win the All Ireland Championship in 1988 before then the All Ireland Championship with an Under 21 team in 1990 . He joined the senior Kilkenny team in 1988 .
