Doris May Lessing is an Anglo-Zimbabwean novelist. She was born to British parents in Iran, where she lived until 1925. Her family then moved to Southern Rhodesia, where she lived until she moved to London, England in 1949. Her novels included Singing Grass, a series of five novels collectively known as The Abused Children., The Golden Handbook, The Good Terror, and the five novels collectively known as Canopus in Argos: Archives. Lessing received the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature. At the awarding of the prize, the Swedish Academy describes her as "an epic of female experience, which with cynicism, fire and visionary powers to make a supervised divided civilization." Lessing is the oldest person to ever receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 2001, Lessing received the David Cohen Award for Lifetime Achievement in English Literature. In 2008, The Times ranked her fifth on the list of "50 greatest writers in England since 1945".
