Edgar Daniel Nixon, known as ED Nixon, is a civil rights leader and African-American labor organizer in Alabama who was instrumental in organizing the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. The boycott highlighted racism issues in the South. maintained for more than a year by black residents and nearly bankrupt a city-owned bus system. It ended in December 1956, after the US Supreme Court ruled in the related case, Browder v. Gayle, that local and state law is unconstitutional and has ordered the state to end bus discrimination. A longtime organizer and activist, Nixon is president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Montgomery Welfare Federation and the Montgomery Voters' League. At the time, Nixon headed the Montgomery branch of the Sleep Car Carrier Coalition, known as the Pullman Porters' Union, which he helped to organize.
