Edmund Lockyer, an English soldier and Australian explorer. Born in Plymouth, Devon, Lockyer is the son of Thomas Lockyer, a sailor, and his wife Ann, née Grose. Lockyer began his military career as a soldier in the 19th Regiment in June 1803, was promoted to lieutenant in early 1805 and appointed captain in August 1805. promoted to major in August 1819 and in August 1824 transferred to the 57th regiment. Lockyer arrived in Sydney, the capital of the British colony of New South Wales, aboard the Royal Charlotte in April 1825 with 57-year-old men; also with his wife and ten children. In August 1825 Lockyer was asked to lead an expedition to explore the upper reaches of the Brisbane River, which had only recently been settled by Europeans. On September 2, Lockyer sailed from Sydney aboard the Mermaid, arriving at the Brisbane settlements on September 7. Leaving the Little Mermaid in Brisbane, he sailed in a small boat on the river.
