Edmund Waller, FRS was an English poet and politician, served as a Member of Parliament for various constituencies from 1624 to 1687 and was one of the oldest members of the House of Representatives. The son of a wealthy Buckinghamshire real estate lawyer, Waller first entered Parliament in 1624, although he had little involvement in the political struggles of the run-up to the First British Civil War, in the year 1642. Unlike his parents William and Hardress Waller, he was a sympathetic royalist and was accused in 1643 of organizing a conspiracy to occupy London for Charles I. - brother-in-law Nathaniel Tomkins. After serving his sentence, he lived comfortably in exile in France and Switzerland until he was allowed to return home by Oliver Cromwell, a distant relative, in 1651
