Edwin McMasters Stanton is an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln administration for much of the US Civil War. Stanton's leadership helped organize the North's enormous military resources and guide the Union to victory. However, he has been criticized by many Alliance generals who view him as overly cautious and micro-management. He also organized the hunt for Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. After the assassination of Lincoln, Stanton remained as Secretary of War under the new President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, during the early years of Reconstruction. He opposes Johnson's policies of tolerance towards the former Southern Union countries. Johnson's attempt to fire Stanton ultimately led Johnson to impeach radical Republicans in the House of Representatives. Stanton returns to law after retiring as Secretary of War.
