She recorded the history and oral legends of Native Americans, and she also contributed to the study of Native American languages. According to Cotera, Deloria is "a leading expert on cultural religion and D / L / Nakota language practices". In the 1940s, Deloria wrote a novel called Lily, published in 1988 and reprinted in 2009.
