Ernest Rutherford
Ernest Rutherford, Nelson's First Baron Rutherford, was a New Zealand physicist known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him the greatest experimenter since Michael Faraday. Early in his work, Rutherford discovered the concept of radioactive half-life, the radioactive element radon, and distinguished and named alpha and beta radiation. This work was carried out at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is the basis of the Nobel Prize in chemistry which was awarded to him in 1908 "for his research on the decomposition of the elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances", for which he is Canadian and at the beginning of Oceania, the first to win the Nobel Prize. In 1907, Rutherford moved to Victoria University in Manchester, England, where he and Thomas Royds demonstrated that alpha radiation is the nucleus of helium. Rutherford performed his most famous work after becoming a Nobel Prize winner.
