Fernando Javier Vargas is a former American professional boxer who competed from 1997 to 2007. He is the two-time lightweight world champion, holding the IBF title from 1998 to 2000 and the title. WBA from 2001 to 2002. With his winning IBF title, Vargas became the youngest boxer in history to win the World Lightweight Championship at the age of 21. As an amateur, he won the bronze medal in light weight at the Inter-American Games in 1995 and entered the second round of the light weight category at the 1996 Olympics. Vargas is best known for fierce competitions with Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga.
