George Meade
George Gordon Meade was a US Army officer and civil engineer best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Previously, he had fought successfully in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, he held the position of Union General, from commanding a brigade to the Potomac Brigade. Earlier in his career, he was an engineer and was involved in building several coastal lighthouses. Meade's combat experience in the Civil War began as brigade commander in the Peninsular Campaign and the Seven-Day Battle. He was seriously injured while commanding his brigade at the Battle of Glendale. As a division commander, he achieved considerable success at the Battle of South Mountain and assumed temporary command of the corps at the Battle of Antietam. Meade's team is arguably the most successful at the match of Fredericksburg in December.
