Gerard Manley Hopkins
Gerard Manley Hopkins was an English poet and Jesuit priest, who would later become famous as one of the leading poets of the Victorian era. His use of love songs - especially the concept of rhythm - helped him become a creative verse writer, as well as his technique of praising God through the use of images and divinity. It was only after his death that Robert Bridges began publishing some of Hopkins' mature poems in anthologies, hoping to pave the way for wider acceptance of his style. In 1930, his work was recognized as one of the most original literary achievements of his century. He clearly influenced early 20th century poets such as T. S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and Cecil Day-Lewis.
