Gerhard Ertl is a German physicist and professor emeritus in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Fritz-Haber der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Institute in Berlin, Germany. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Ertl's research laid the foundations for modern surface chemistry, helping to explain how fuel cells generate energy without causing pollution, how transducers catalyze cleaning car exhaust and even why iron does rust. Astrid Graslund, secretary of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said his work paved the way for the development of cleaner energy sources and will guide the development of fuel cells. He received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on chemical processes on solid surfaces. The Nobel Academy said that Artl provided a detailed description of how chemical reactions take place on surfaces. The academy said its findings were applied to both academic research and industrial development.
