From 2000 to 2008, Brooks played Maya Wilkes in the UPN / The CW comedy series, Girlfriends, in which she received two NAACP Image Award nominations for Best Actress in a comedy series. She has also appeared in the films Motives, Beauty Shop, Something New and The Darkest Minds. In 2019, Brooks received critical acclaim for her performance in TNT's limited-time drama I Am the Night.
