Harold Gregory Moore Jr. is a lieutenant general and author of the United States Army. He received the Cross of Excellence, the US Army's second noble title for courage, and was the first person in his class from West Point to be promoted to Brigadier General, Major General, and Lieutenant General. Moore is remembered as the Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the 1st Battalion, the 7th Cavalry Regiment, at the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, during the Vietnam War. The battle is detailed in the 1992 bestseller We Were Soldiers Once… and Young, co-written and edited by Moore as the 2002 movie We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson as Moore; Moore is the "honorary colonel" of the regiment. Moore received the Saint Maurice Medal from the National Infantry Association as well as the Outstanding Graduation Award from the West Point Graduate Students Association.
