Hank Ballard is an American R&B singer and songwriter, lead singer for The Midnighters, and one of the first rock and roll artists to emerge in the early 1950s. He played a key role in the development of the genre, releasing hit singles "Work With Me, Annie" and response songs "Annie Had a Baby" and "Annie's Aunt Fannie" with Midnighters of him. Then he initially wrote and recorded "The Twist", covered by Chubby Checker a year later, this second version that spread the dance's popularity. He was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 .
