Eric Wilson "Hank" Gathers Jr was an American college basketball athlete for the Loyola Marymount Lions of the West Coast Conference. As a student in 1989, he became the second player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring and recovering in the same season. The Gathers were the second consensus team at All America as a senior in 1990. His number 44 was retired by the Lions, who also placed a statue of him in his honor outside their Gersten pavilion. The Gathers started their college career with the USC Trojan, but along with teammate Bo Kimble moved to Loyola Marymount after their freshman year. Playing under the direction of Lions coach Paul Westhead and his quick system, the Gathers have been selected three times for the All-WCC's flagship roster. In his first season at Loyola Marymount University, he won the first of the two most valuable consecutive player titles at the MCC tournament. As a child, he was named CMC Player of the Year and began to receive recognition throughout the United States.
