Harriet E. Wilson is an African American novelist. She was the first African-American to publish a novel on the North American continent. His novel Our Nig, or Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, was published anonymously in 1859 in Boston, Massachusetts, and was not widely known. The novel was discovered in 1982 by the scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who noted it as the first African-American novel to be published in the United States. Born a free black man in New Hampshire, Wilson was orphaned as a child and was bound until the age of 18 as an unsecured servant. She struggled to make a living after that, got married twice; Her only son, George, died at the age of 7 in the shabby house she had placed him in as she tried to survive as a widow. She wrote a novel. Wilson was later affiliated with the Spiritualist Church, paid on public lecture channels for lectures about his life, and worked as a motel housekeeper.
