Heinz Werner Zimmermann is a German composer specializing in contemporary sacred music. Zimmermann was born in Freiburg im Breisgau and directed his first composition from 1946 to 1948 with Julius Weismann. He studied from 1950 to 1954 at Heidelberg with Wolfgang Fortner as well as at Kirchenmusikalisches Institut Heidelberg. After passing his exams at the Freiburg Conservatory under the direction of Harald Genzmer, he became Fortner 's successor in Heidelberg. There, he maintained a close relationship with the musician Thrasyboulos Georgiades, whose rhythm and linguistic studies influenced him the most, as well as his career in American soul and jazz. From 1963 to 1976 Heinz Werner Zimmermann was director of the Spandauer Kirchenmusikschule in Spandau, then from 1975 to 1996 he succeeded Kurt Hessenberg as professor of composition at the University of Music and Performance in Frankfurt.
