Henry Brevard Davidson graduated from the United States Military Academy and was an officer in the United States Army in the West before the American Civil War. At the beginning of the war, he resigned from the commission and held various staff positions in the Army of the Southern states. On 18 August 1863 he was promoted to brigade commander and first commander of cavalry brigades at the Western Theater, especially in Tennessee and Georgia. In 1864 he was transferred to Virginia and served on the Valley campaigns in 1864. At the end of the war, he served under General Joseph E. Johnston during the Carolina Campaign. After the war he became a civil engineer in California and in 1887 became Assistant Secretary of State for California. He then worked as an agent for the South Pacific Railway in Danville, California.
