Henry Lee Lucas is an American serial killer with crimes that lasted from 1960 to 1983. He was convicted of killing 11 people and sentenced to death for the murder of Debra Jackson, although his sentence was dropped to life imprisonment in 1998. Lucas became infamous then confessed more than 100 homicides to Texas Rangers and other law enforcement officials in prison. He died of congestive heart failure in 2001. A Dallas Times-Herald investigation subsequently discredited Lucas's numerous murder confessions and led to a follow-up investigation by the Texas attorney general. The investigation concluded that Lucas was a pathological liar who made a false statement. It was Lucas who told the confession as a hoax. Lucas's case led to a reassessment of police techniques and a greater awareness of false confessions.
