Clarke performed as the lead dancer with Katherine Dunham Company and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, 1960; theater, film and television actresses, from the 70s to the 80s; choreographer and director, 1980s. Clarke served on the Tony Award nomination committee for the 2011-2012 Broadway season. Clarke made history in 1995 when she became the first African-American woman, as well as the first African-American woman to direct and choreograph much of the opera Porgy and Bess. The production of George Gershwin's classics directed by Clarke was staged to commemorate the work's 60th anniversary, and it has toured not only in major American cities, but also in Japan and Europe.
