Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, also known as Horace Walpole, is an English writer, art historian, writer, antiquarian and Whig politician. He built Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, southwest London, reviving the Gothic style decades before the Victorian successors. His literary fame lies in his first Gothic novel, the Castle of Otranto, and his Letters, which are of great social and political interest. They were published by Yale University Press in 48 volumes. As the youngest son of the first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, first Earl of Orford, he became the 4th Earl of Orford and eventually after the death of his nephew in 1791. His Baron Walpole was descended from his first cousin after have been deleted from the same name. but Baron Walpole of Wolterton. The young Horatio Walpole was then created a new Earl of Orford.
