Hugh MacDiarmid
Christopher Murray Grieve, better known by the pseudonym Hugh MacDiarmid, is a Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and politician. He is considered one of the main forces behind the Scottish Renaissance and had a lasting influence on Scottish culture and politics. Grieve's first work, including The Chronicles of the Five Senses, was written in English, but he is best known for using "synthetic Scottish", a literary version of the Scottish language. which he himself developed. Since the early 1930s, MacDiarmid has used more English, sometimes "mixed English" supplemented with scientific and technical vocabulary. The son of a postman, MacDiarmid was born in the border town of Scotland, Langholm, Dumfriesshire. He trained at the Langholm Academy before becoming a teacher briefly at the Broughton Higher Grade School in Edinburgh.
