James Lawrence Levine is an American conductor and pianist. He was Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera from 1976 to 2016. He officially ended all of his posts and ties with the Met on March 12, 2018, due to allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denied. Levine has held executive positions at the Ravinia Festival, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1980 he launched the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and trained singers, conductors and musicians for professional careers. After taking a hiatus from health-related activities for nearly two years from 2011 to 2013, during which he held artistic and administrative planning sessions at the Met and led the training of young artist Lindemann, Levine took up his retired as a full-time musician from the director of the Met. after the 2015-2016 season, to become honorary musical director.
