James Whitcomb Riley is an American best-selling writer, poet, and author. Throughout his life, he was known as the "Hoosier Poet" and "Poet for Children" for his local and children's poetry. His poems have a sense of humor or sentimentality. Of the more than 1,000 poems written by Riley, the majority are in dialects. His famous works include "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man". Riley began her poetry career as a sign maker and mailer to newspapers. Thanks in part to the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's endorsement, he finally landed successive work with press editors in Indiana in the late 1870s. It gradually gained prominence in the 1880s through his poetry tours. He went on touring first in the Midwest and then nationwide, appearing alone or alongside other famous talents. During this period, Riley began a long-term dependence on alcohol affecting his performance, and as a result, he suffered financial losses.
