Jeannette Ridlon Piccard was an American hot air balloon player and later a Catholic priestess. She has held the record for female height for almost three decades and, according to some contemporary documents, is considered the first woman in space. Piccard was the first licensed female hot air balloon pilot in the United States and the first female to fly into the stratosphere. Accompanied by her husband, Jean, a member of the Piccard balloonist family and twin brother of Auguste Piccard, she reached a height of 10.9 miles in a record flight over Lake Erie on October 23, 1934, retaining the ball control for the entire flight. After her husband passed away in 1963, she served as an advisor to NASA's Johnson Space Center director for several years, addressed the public about NASA's work, and was subsequently promoted to the Hall of Fame of Space.
