She began her career by appearing in Broadway musicals and as a backup singer for Bette Midler before appearing in films Beaches and Sister Act. Lewis is known as a mother in the movies What's Love Got to Do With It, Poetic Justice, The Preacher's Wife, The Brothers, The Cookout, Think Like a Man and in the sequel Think Like a Man Too, Baggage Claim. and The Wedding Ringer, as well as on the TV miniseries The Temptations. Thus, Lewis earned the title of "Hollywood Black Mother". She also voiced Mama Odie in the Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog and Flo in Pixar's Cars series. Supporting roles in the movie include The Dead President, Cast Away, and Herfter. On television, Lewis played the role of Lana Hawkins in the lifelong medical television series Strong Medicine from 2000 to 2006. She also has recurring roles in the sitcoms A Different World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Girlfriends.
