Jeremy Taylor
Jeremy Taylor was a missionary of the Church of England who became famous as an author during the protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as "Shakespeare of the Divines" for his poetic style of expression, and he is often regarded as one of the greatest English prose writers. He is remembered in the Saints calendar of the Church of England with one less holiday on August 13. Taylor is under the patronage of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury. He became the ordinary chaplain to King Charles I thanks to Laud's sponsorship. This put him under political suspicion when Laud was tried for treason and executed by the Puritan parliament on January 1644/5 during the British Civil War. After the victory of parliament over the king, he was briefly imprisoned several times. Ultimately he was allowed to live quietly in Wales, where he became Earl Carbery's private chaplain.
