Sylvester James Gates Jr., known as S. James Gates Jr. or Jim Gates, an American theoretical physicist working on the theory of supersymmetry, supergravity and superstrings. He retired from the Department of Physics and the University of Maryland's Basic Physics Center in Computer Science, Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 2017 and is currently Director of the Brown Theoretical Physics Center, Ford Foundation Professor of Physics, Professor Associate of Mathematics, and Fellow of the Watson Institute's Institute of International Studies & Public Affairs at Brown University. He was a professor at the University of Maryland Regents and a member of Barack Obama's Science and Technology Advisory Board.
