Jimmy Gownley is an American comic author / artist best known for his award-winning comic book Amelia Rules. He grew up in the small town of Girardville, Pennsylvania and began writing and drawing his own comics from an early age. His first published work was the Shades of Gray, which he self-published. Two issues, self-distributed in volume of about 100 copies, were published in 1988-1989 when the artist was still in high school. Twelve additional issues, starting with # 1 and titled Shades of Gray Comics and Stories, have a national circulation of a few thousand copies, with full-color covers and black and white interior design. Gownley called his publisher Lady Luck, Ltd. In 1998, Gownley published a graphic novel Shades of Gray, titled Fiction, Part One. The graphic novel that includes a CD of songs, supposedly written and sung by the characters, was actually written by Gownley and performed by a group of hired musicians.
