Joan Hume McCracken is an American dancer, actress and comedian, best known for her role as Sylvie in the 1943 Oklahoma movie! She is also known for her performances in the Broadway shows Bloomer Girl, Billion Dollar Baby and Dance Me a Song, and the Hollywood films Canteen and Good News. McCracken is a pioneer of theater dance. In his Oklahoma! for the role, she became an instant spotlight with a carefully choreographed dance on her dance "Many a New Day". She is considered a creator in combining choreography and comedy, and moved into dramatic roles on Broadway and early television. However, her career was cut off, ending several years before she passed away at the age of 43, as she suffered from complications of diabetes. McCracken has generously promoted the careers of other dancers, including Shirley MacLaine, and was a powerful influence on her second husband, Bob Fosse, encouraging him to become a choreographer dance.
