Joseph Franklin Niekro is a right-handed professional baseball player. He is the brother of pitcher Phil Niekro and father of Major League pitcher and first basketball player Lance Niekro. Niekro was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and attended Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, Ohio and West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia. In a 22-year baseball career, he pitched from 1967 to 1988 for seven different teams, primarily for the Houston Astros.
