Oxford University literary critic John Bayley wrote that Ashbery "sounded, in poetry, the standard tone of the day." Langdon Hammer, director of the English department at Yale University, wrote in 2008: "No character has appeared in American poetry in the past 50 years like John Ashbery" and "No American poet has a vocabulary. Larger and more diverse, not Whitman, not Pound. Stephanie Burt, a poet and professor of English at Harvard, compared Ashbery to Dr. Eliot, calling Ashbery "the last but half the number of surviving English-speaking poets considered a great role model, and the other half thought incomprehensible.
