John Curtin
John Curtin was an Australian politician who served as Australia's 14th Prime Minister from 1941 until his death in 1945. He ruled the country for most of World War II, including all of it, to the 'except for the last weeks of the Pacific War. He was the leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1935 to 1945, and the party's longest-serving leader until the time of Gough Whitlam. Curtin's leadership and personal bravery have been praised by contemporary politicians. He is often considered one of Australia's greatest prime ministers. Curtin left school at the age of 13 and joined the labor movement in Melbourne. He joined the Labor Party at a young age and also joined the Victorian Social Party. He became Secretary of State for the Woodworkers Association in 1911 and Federal President in 1914. Curtin led the “No” campaign in the 1916 referendum on overseas enlistment and was briefly examined for refusing to participate in the compulsory medical examination.
