John Francome is a former national jockey hunting champion, television expert and author. Born in Swindon, Wiltshire, the son of a railway firefighter, his family had no connection to the world of horse racing. At sixteen, he apprenticed to Lambourn's trainer, Fred Winter, and thus began his riding career. He has raced a total of 1,138 winners, his last being in April 1985. During his career he won seven jockey championships, from 1976 to 1985. Francome is the third most successful National Hunt jumper of all time after Tony McCoy and Peter Scudamore. He is nicknamed the best racer ever to win a Grand National. After retiring, Francome received MBE in 1986 for his racing services. He trained for 18 months before becoming a TV host for Channel 4's horse racing shows. Like another former horse racer, Dick Francis, Francome began writing fiction. . His book is on the bestseller list.
