John Illsley
John Edward Illsley is an English musician, best known as the bassist of the rock band Dire Straits. With him, he received numerous BRIT and Grammy Awards, as well as a Heritage Award. As a founding member of the group, alongside guitarist brothers Mark and David Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers, Illsley played a key role in the sound development of Dire Straits. By the time the band disbanded in 1995, staff changes meant that Illsley and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler were the only two members of the original band. Illsley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018. Illsley has produced two of his own albums, with Mark Knopfler as guest musician and helping with projects in Mark's personal and charitable organization . He released two more albums, influenced by the Celtic Cunla group.
