John Kennedy Toole
John Kennedy Toole is an American novelist from New Orleans, Louisiana whose novel A Confederacy of Dunces was published, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for the novel. He also wrote the Neon Bible. Although some in the literary world found his writing skills commendable, Toole's novels were rejected throughout his life. After suffering from paranoia and depression in part because of these failures, he committed suicide at the age of 31. Toole was born into a middle class family in New Orleans. From an early age, his mother, Thelma, taught him to appreciate culture. She has been fully involved in her job for most of her life, and they sometimes have a difficult relationship. With her mother's encouragement, Toole became a stage artist at the age of 10 with her comedy and acting roles. At the age of 16, he wrote his first novel, The Neon Bible, which he later dismissed as a "teenager". Toole received a scholarship from Tulane University in New Orleans.
