John Le Mesurier is an English actor. He is perhaps best known for his comedic role as Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the sitcom for the BBC television series Dad's Army. As a self-proclaimed 'actor actor', Le Mesurier has appeared in over 120 films in a variety of genres, often in smaller subscriptions. Le Mesurier became interested in theater from a young age and enrolled at the Fay Compton Studio of Dramatic Art in 1933. Since then he has held a theatrical position and made his theater debut in September 1934 at the Palladium Theater in Edinburgh in JB Priestley plays at Danger Corner. Later, he accepted an offer to work with Alec Guinness on John Gielgud's movie Hamlet. He made his television debut in 1938 as The Lord of the Miolans in the BBC show The Marvelous History of St Bernard. During World War II, Le Mesurier was brought to British India as the captain of the Royal Tank Regiment.
