John Ernst Steinbeck Jr is an American author and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 "for his realistic and imaginative works, combining sympathetic humor and acute social conscience". He is known as the "giant of American letters", and many of his works are considered classics of Western literature. During his writing career, he authored 33 books, including one co-authored by Edward Ricketts, comprising 16 novels, six non-fiction and two short stories. He is widely known for his comedy novels Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row, the multigenerational epic East of Eden, and the novel The Red Pony and Of Mice and Men. The Pulitzer Prize, The Grapes of Wrath, is considered Steinbeck's masterpiece and is part of the American literary canon. In its first 75 years after publication, it sold 14 million copies. Most of Steinbeck's work takes place in central California, especially in the Salinas Valley and California's Coast Ranges.
