Jonas Basanavicius
Jonas Basanavičius is a Lithuanian activist and advocate. He took part in all the major events that led to the independence of Lithuania and often received the unofficial honorary title of "The Father" for his contributions. Born into a peasant family, Basanavičius wanted to become a priest but instead chose to study medicine at the Moscow Medical Academy. He worked as a doctor from 1880 to 1905 in the Duchy of Bulgaria. Despite the distance, he devoted considerable efforts to Lithuanian cultural work. He founded the first Lithuanian newspaper Aušra, published articles about Lithuania in the press, collected samples of Lithuanian folklore and published them. He was also involved in the local politics of Bulgaria. He returned to Lithuania in 1905 and immediately became involved in Lithuanian cultural life. He became president of the organizing committee of the Vilnius Seimas in 1905.
