Baron Jöns Jacob Berzelius is a Swedish chemist. Berzelius along with Robert Boyle, John Dalton and Antoine Lavoisier are considered among the founders of modern chemistry. Berzelius became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1808 and has served since 1818 as its director general. He is known in Sweden as "the father of Swedish chemistry". Berzelius Day was celebrated on 20 August in his honor. Although Berzelius began his career as a doctor, his enduring contributions are in the fields of electrochemistry, chemical bonding, and analytical measurement. In particular, he is known for the determination of atomic mass and his experiments led to a more complete understanding of the principles of fecal measurement, a branch of chemistry involved in the relationship quantification between elements in chemical compounds and chemical reactions and occurring at defined rates.
