Joost Van den Vondel
Joost van den Vondel is a Dutch poet, writer and playwright. He is considered the foremost Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century. His plays are those of this period still performed most frequently and his epic Joannes de Boetgezant, from the life of John the Baptist, has been called the greatest Dutch epic. Vondel's theatrical productions continued to be performed regularly until the 1960s. The most obvious is the annual New Year's Day performance from 1637 to 1968 by Gijsbrecht van Aemstel. Vondel still works efficiently until very old. Some of his most notable plays such as Lucifer and Adam in Exile were written after 1650, when he was 65, and his last play Noah, written at the age of eighty, is considered to be the one of his best plays.
