He is a largely self-taught artist whose style and influence permeates the dark side of life, often portraying humankind's distorted characters and debauchery. He remained a controversial figure throughout his career, not only because of his often shocking images, but also because of his opposition to writers and artists, whom he considers corrupt. Or just for money. In 1992, the José Luis Cuevas Museum was opened in the historic center of Mexico City, home to most of his personal art collection and collection. His nephew, Alexis de Chaunac is a contemporary artist.
