Joseph Henry
Joseph Henry is an American scientist who served as the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He was secretary of the National Institute for the Advancement of Science, a precursor to the Smithsonian Institution. He was very popular all his life. While building electromagnets, Henry discovered the phenomenon of electromagnetism. He also discovered the phenomenon of mutual inductance independently of Michael Faraday, though Faraday was the first to discover and publish his results. Henry developed the electromagnet into a practical device. He invented the precursor to electric bells and electric relays. The SI unit of inductance, Henry, was named in his honor. Henry's work on electromagnetic relays formed the basis of the practical telegraph, by Samuel F. B. Morse and Sir Charles Wheatstone, separately.
