Joseph Priestley
Joseph Priestley is an English chemist, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarist, multi-subject educator, and liberal political theorist, who has published over 150 books. Historically he is credited with discovering oxygen, isolating it in the gaseous state, although Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Antoine Lavoisier also made strong claims about this discovery, Scheele discovered that it was in 1772, two years before Priestley. During his lifetime, Priestley's remarkable scientific reputation was based on his invention of sparkling water, his writings on electricity, and his discovery of some of the most famous "air". Priestley's determination to defend the phlogiston theory and reject what would become the chemical revolution eventually left him isolated in the scientific community. Priestley's science is an integral part of his theology, and he constantly strives to unite Enlightenment rationalism with Christianism.
