Junot Díaz is a Dominican-American writer, professor of creative writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and novel editor at the Boston Review. He also serves on the advisory board of the Free University, a voluntary organization in Georgia that provides post-secondary education to undocumented immigrants. At the heart of Díaz's work is the experience of immigrants, in particular the experience of Latino immigrants. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Díaz and his family immigrated to New Jersey when he was just 6 years old. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and, shortly after graduating, created the character "Yunior", who served as a storyteller for several of his later books. After earning a Masters of Fine Arts from Cornell University, Díaz published his first book, the Drown short story anthology of 1995. Diaz was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Novel for the novel Life of Miracles. scholarship in 2012.
