Juozas Tumas-Vaizgantas
Juozas Tumas, also known by the pseudonym Vaižgantas, was a Lithuanian Roman Catholic priest and activist during the Lithuanian National Renaissance period. He is a rich writer, editor of nine periodicals, a university professor, and member of many societies and organizations. His most notable works of fiction include Pragiedruliai novels and D irdės for ordinary villagers. Born into a Lithuanian peasant family, Tumas was educated at a gym in Daugavpils and the Kaunas Priest Seminary. He began to contribute to the Lithuanian press, which was then banned by the Russian tsarist authorities in 1889 or 1890. He was ordained a priest in 1893 and posted to Mitau. In 1895 he was appointed to Moscow in the northwestern part of Lithuania. There he organized the publication of Tėvynės sargas and smuggled books into Lithuania. His brother Jonas was arrested with banned publications and sentenced to three years in prison and two years in exile.
