Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla is an American astronaut, engineer and the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a Mission Specialist and Senior Robot Arm Operator. In 2003, Chawla was one of seven crew members killed in the space shuttle Columbia disaster when a spacecraft disintegrated when re-entering Earth's atmosphere. After being awarded the Medal of Space Honor by Congress and several streets, universities and academies have been named in his honor. She is considered a national hero in India.
