Kenny Clarke
Kenneth Clarke Spearman, nicknamed Klook, is an American drummer and jazz band. A major innovator of the bebop style, he pioneered the use of cymbals to preserve time rather than the hi-hat, as well as the use of the bass drum to create jagged sounds. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he lost his parents at the age of 5 and began playing drums at the age of 8 or 9 at the behest of an orphanage teacher. Turning professional in 1931 at the age of seventeen, he moved to New York in 1935 when he began to build his style of drumming and fame. As a family drummer at Minton's Playhouse in the early 1940s, he engaged in the after-work pleasures that led to the birth of the bebop. After serving in the United States and Europe from 1943 to 1946, he returned to New York, but from 1948 to 1951, he was mainly stationed in Paris.
